What Species Is This?

Caught this at Albion and was wondering which species it is. Thanks.

I know it's not a scorpionfish because I have caught a ton of those in SD. This fish was mature and small.

The long preopercular spines and the bony plates along the lateral line are pretty decent clues.

Buffalo Sculpin (Enophrys bison)

This fish has a look like it has been around for a long time like the sturgeon.

None of the pics in all the guides looked anything like the one I caught. Your pic does show it better. I couldn't tell from pics like this at all.

While pretty, that is a poor photo for a guide book.  You can't even see the fishes body.  That guide book should buy your photo to use.

Personally, I like drawings.

The best guide book out there (IMHO) is
"Guide to the Coastal Marine Fishes of California" by Daniel J. Miller and Robert N. Lea
It includes a dichotomous key which can be very helpful (if you know how to use it).
