Tiny,

I have only had one hook in my hand.  It was saltwater trebel attached to a lure that was attached to a very angry striper.  Fortunately I had a pair of 8" Channellock diagonal cutters in the boat.  The barb penetrated into the ball of my palm and had to be removed in an emergency room.  A good rule of thumb is not to have a hook on the boat that your cutters won't easily cut.  Test the cutters on actual hooks, not soft wire.

My Channellocks have rusted over years of exposure and are not as effective as they once were.  I have bought three different brands of "fishing" pliers in the $10-$40 range.  None of them cut as well as Channellocks.  I may buy a new pair of Channellocks.  Let me know if find a better solution.

For yak fishing, I have converted most of my hooks to good quality, but smaller diameter, hooks.  Except for bass and striper lures, I use almost all single hooks, rather than trebles.

Good luck.
Doug

Thanks guys for the input.I pretty much figured channel locks(linesmen pliers)worked well.I was just wondering if there was some type of fishing pliers being used that were less likely to rust. A small pair of bolt cutters is also a good idea that would work well.

I keep them in a dry box with all my other first aid stuff just in case I use regular needle nose for the rest of my trips

Manly pliers can cut through a 3/0 VMC 4x treble hook.
