Just don't get caught doing it! I've seen captains threaten to throw GPS overboard if the passenger didn't put it away! Most of the bay fishing can be done with landmarks anyways so it isn't totally necessary.

California Dawn is a good boat. All the smiths can fish. Bring two rigs if you can one light salmon steelhead style with a baitcaster loaded with 15# mono and then a conventional rig filled with 20# mono. Tie up some three way halibut rigs with 1/0 to 4/0 hooks so you can adjust to the bait size. Grab a handfull of 2 to 8 oz torpedo sinkers and you are set.

Bring some beer and plan on eating a burger for lunch because once they start cooking em up your cold sandwhich is not going to sound so great.
