I asked my LDS manager (40 years of diving experience in northern Cal) to suggest a spear gun.  To my surprise, the answer I got was a 2' gun.

He said the range of spear gun is about 3 times the arrow length, so that'll give me a 6' range, which is sufficient for northern cal waters.

I trust the guy's experience, but I seem to recall reading elsewhere that an ideal length is more like 4' (48 inches).  So I want to double check with you guys....

Hi Diver:

Check with the following but, 2' sound like a little short!

I shoot a 24 special and can kill all the fish my family of five can eat but I want to go to the JBL mini carbine that is only 18" shaft for use in the kelp and most shots under the rocks are under two feet and is easy to carry on the float tube when AB diving
hope that hopes some

For RF hunting, 2' long is great.  But if you're after bigger/faster species, 4-5' is a good choice.

What type of gun did he recommend?  (i.e. model/length)

2ft is too short & 5' is waaaaaay too long for norcal.

if your diving in kelp stay under 36 anything longer is to hard to swing. 24 is short, i keep a 24 with me diving for abs. i love my 36 Riffe, i put a longer shaft for halibut, a shorter one for the rocks with a light mounted on the front to look in deep holes for lings. and i shorten the line by 3 ft this helps keeping fish from wrapping up in kelp.

I love my JBL magnum 38-special. I added a rockpoint spear tip.

Check out the reviews:

I also use a JBL mini carbine for blues, blacks and perch.

These two guns cover all my spearfishing on the North Coast.
Guys such as Fuzz and the like would have more info on the subject than a mere mortal such as myself. I don't get out to spearfish even close to as many times as they do. These two guns cover all my bases.
Simple design, built solid, easy to use.

That's a great looking gun Tote. Even a review from a spearo in my hood recommending it for our waters. Will definitely check it out.

55cm shaft !?  You probably meant a 55cm gun (barrel length), with 75 - 85 cm shaft, good hole gun. A 55 cm shaft would translate into a 25cm- 35cm (10" - 14" )gun.
IMHO iIf you are really looking for one NorCal gun then get a 75cm band gun or a 55 - 70 cm pneumatic.
