A friend of mine floated the Stani this weekend, and saw lots of big Stripers . Anyone know the best approach for river fishing these fish. I was thinking you wouldnt want to troll with the current but maybe top water ,fishtraps or ????. Anyone have any advice on how to nail a big one. He said the river was 2 to 4 foot deep. Iam hoping to test any advice I get this weekend!!!!

Dave, most of the shore fishermen I know who fish the stani throw topwater, spooks, pencil poppers.  also wake/subsurface baits like xraps.  i think it would work the same from the yak, pull off to the sides and fish over the deeper pockets.

i think rattle traps or plastic swimbaits would work too, retrieved fast. you need to keep real quiet in that skinny water.  just be careful, it can be a little treacherous from what jeffrm20 told me.

wish i could get out with you but i'm heading south this weekend.  keep the stani quiet is what people say  :smt002

Hey Dave,

The only thing I would add to Ben's list is that I've heard of a lot of people catching stripers in the Stan with bait -- dead and live. One guy I spoke to, who catches big ones regularly, said the secret is to make sure your lure is big enough to get their attention. He was throwing a broke back rappala that was at least 8" long, his other rod had a spook about the same size.

What section of the river did he float?

I have fished the stani quite a few times for stripers. My best luck has always been a Zoom Super fluke in white pearl with a Gami 1/4 oz leadhead jig head. Work it like a jerkbait. I find big pools and they will be hanging out right outside of the fast current.

Thanks for all the info!!! He floated from Jacob Myers park to the River road park. I am going to try and get out this weekend if the flows are still down.

They use big black curltailed worms on the Sac for em. I'd imagine they would work down there too. They imitae the eels in the rivers.

Hey guys,

The river is up at 1350 cfs as of Thursday.  It usually stays at this level until sometime in May or June.

If you can find a spot out of the current to sit, or dare anchor, I have had good luck backtrolling anything large with good action like a xraps and rappalas

Be sure to post when you head out.
I am trying to hit the gravel pond on OrangeBlossom sometime next week if the weather cooperates.

Good luck,
