Sandi Jensen and her husband, Scott who operate the historic Fall River Hotel, told MyOutdoorBuddy another adventure also awaits outdoor lovers at their establishment. “Besides the great showing of waterfowl, we have a wintery scene here that’s right out of Currier & Ives. Even better, many areas are accessible by car and boat (snow, ice and weather conditions permitting) to observe the birds and other wildlife. And we are a great starting point for kayakers and canoe buffs who want to float the Pit River or explore our many nearby lakes by boat,” Sandi Jensen said.

“PG&E has just opened a new access point for kayakers, canoeists and rafters who want to float the Pit River. The access point is right across the Pit River Bridge near the hotel and you can float easily to the Hat Creek Park take-out,” Sandi said. “This is about a two-hour trip downstream and for our guests we will arrange to pick up those who make the journey, and bring them back to the hotel. It’s an ideal arrangement for all,” she said.

At the end of December PG&E completed the Pit River Weir Access, which includes a parking lot for 12 vehicles including handicapped, vault toilet and trail to the Pit River Weir. Construction of this “put-in” point for kayakers, canoeists and rafters was part of the utilities licensing process for its Pit 1 Hydropower Project. I drove by and checked this one out today.  It is nice and will give access to the Pit River around Fall River.   The gate was locked right at the river but I am going to assume that they will open it up closer to when people will want to start fishing.   I was talking to one of my friends who works for PG&E and he said later they will have picnic tables.   Should be lots of good bass and catfish areas as I don’t think they ever get fished that much there.   Just below that area is a place called Big Eddy where you can put in too.  It is a couple of miles down Cassel Rd but has some really good fishing also and would be perfect for a Kayak as it hardly ever gets much fishing pressure.
Now as for the rest of the story that you can have a nice float down to Hat Creek Park they must have gotten their stories crossed up.  First Pit River does not go by Hat Creek Park and if you tried you would drop about 1000 feet and go over a pretty good sized waterfall in Pit River Canyon.   I think they were talking about putting in where Baum Lake dumps into Hat Creek.  It is a very nice little float and really pretty too.

I drove by here again saturday.  It is a nice little place that will give access to the Pit River in the Fall River Valley.  Looks like it will mainly be bass and catfish.
