I hooked a monster trout at @ 9:45 am. on 1/31/2010 (salmon size, no kidding), thats the good part, it goes pretty bad after that. I fought the fish to my yak and actually had it in my hands and lost it. about an hour later while talking  to a fellow NCKA angler (Bink) I was sitting side saddle and flipped my yak. After losing a few choice Items to the bottom of the lake, my Kokotat Tempest pants started filling up with quite a bit of water, that along with my Extrasport Striper PFD. with way to many pockets self rescue was becoming increasingly difficult. Luckily for me other yakkers and boaters were around to help me. A very Humbling experience to say the least. I learned a number of things from my first time fishing from a yak. Practice, practice, practice, self rescue in sweet water before moving on to Delta, Bay, Ocean etc. also Everything that is written about PFD's with to many pockets is true. the pockets hang up on everything.  Other than that I had a great time and would be back out there tomorrow if I didn't have to work on monday. Yak fishing is awesome. I caught the fish on a shad rapala (thanks Mooch ) Shout out to StinkyTofu and Bink.

Sorry about your lost monster Trout!  That must be a great feeling catching a Trout of that size.  Thank you for the report and welcome to the MADNESS!

Too bad about losing the fish and some other choice items. Luckily, you learned a hard lesson on a lake though. That wouldn't be fun out in the Bay with a ripping current. I'm sure the mods will move this to the fishing report section or the this happened to me area. Welcome to the board...

Welcome to NCKA and the madness the wet way.  Glad to hear you are okay.  Where you wearing a wetsuit?  Don't think of it as a lost fish--just CPR without the P.

Thanks for the reminders on safety.

WTTM,
Glad you were not in serious danger and it all turned out good.
Sometimes it's good to have experiances like these early on so as to keep as a reminder when we get more experiance and feel invencable.
As for the fish - I cherrish the memories more than any picture.
Great job and again WTTM (WElcOMetOthEMAddnESS)

I've donated my share of gear to the sea & lost more choice fish than I want to think about.
BUT, you learn more with every trip & as Mooch said, it just gets better from here.

B.A,

As a friendly reminder, every fishing report should come with pictures...even if there's no fish in it :smt002

LOL!  B.A. beat me to the report!  I actually witness the monster!  I was about 30 yards or so behind him and saw the trout flash!  It looked around 6 or 7 lb from my distance.  Thought he had it on board, so I went about my ways.  I ended up near my favorit trollin spot and landed a whopper jr $.99 special around 10:30.  17 1/2" long at 2.73 lb. Not a "mooch whopper" by any means, but still had a great time cruising the yak.  And yes, it was my first time on a yak fishing as well.  Met up with Bink at the end and took a few pics!

Didn't want to treadjack, but if it's ok with you, I'd like to post the pics?

BTW it was nice to see other NCKAers out on the water.  Good to meet both Brian (B.A.) and Michael (Bink).

BA, welcome!

Are you certain you had the pants/top joined up together properly?  My first time out in the water with them I had water come in the back cuz I was sporting some plumber crack...    It's kinda hard to get it sealed all around but once you do it seems fairly watertight...

Sorry about the lost fish B.A. Glad everything went well with your flip and rescue.
My first ever flip was out on the ocean with some good swells at the same time.
That was not fun at all. Good thing I had people around me as well to help. When
the lake warms up I will be practicing some more self rescue. Hope
to fish with you soon.

Okay, finally found some time to post!  So I was out on Lake Chabot with B.A. and stinkytofu for newbie day  :smt002.  I paddled many hours with no luck (I'm on a bit of a skunk streak lately, both from shore and my yak).  Regardless, I had a great day on the water.  I was there when B.A. ended up taking a swim.  It was a good reminder how easily that things can go from dry to wet.  B.A. and I were having a nice conversation when all of a sudden I see the yak flip right out from under B.A.  There was nothing obvious that would have indicated that was going to happen.  It was nice meeting B.A. and stinkytofu that day.  I'm looking forward to seeing them (and everyone else) out on the water again soon.

Sucks to lose a fish that way! Theres always bigger ones out there. You'll get more chances.
