Hi all,
I've been invited to participate in the new Davenport Gallery's March art showing. This month's theme is "water, and features scultpure, paintings, and photos.
I'll have 4 pieces up for the rest of the month, from my "polynesian" period. My pieces are carved/burned wooden panels with abalone insets.

piece titles are "Mola", "Tiger shark with pilot fish", "Pikea & the whale" (below#1), and "Dakuwaqua and the Kadavu reef god"(below#2).

#1 was inspired by the legend of how the islands of New Zealand were populated

#2 was inspired by a Tahitian story of Dakuwaqua, a sea god who often too the form of a large tiger shark. Tricked by his friend Masilaca into a rumble with the guardian of Kadavu reef, Dakuwaqua was bested by the huge octopus & had to promise never to harm the fishermen of the lagoon. Some fishermen today still pour out a cup of kava before they paddle out, to honor Dakuwaqua (since he apparently has kept his promise).

#3 was made around the same time as #2. Maybe it's Dakuwaqua in better days.

both of the lower pieces have Davenport abalone shell shard insets for eyes

The meet-the-artist show will be the same day as the AOTY derby/potluck, Saturday March 13th from 5-8pm (It will be a busy day for me).

Check it out if you are in the area.

Not this time, BUT I was only invited to participate last week so it was short notice. All of the pieces I have up for this show are old ones off of my living room walls. I've been too busy getting the finish onto the AOTY awards to get new stuff done.

There will be some white shark pieces in the future though. I at least got to tell the story again when I dropped of the pieces yesterday. I was talking to Steve, one of the artists who was helping hang the show, and of course I was talking fishing in San Mateo County.

He asked me if we launched from Pillar Point, & I said "nah, we launched right from the beach in our kayaks". He kind of stopped & then slowly said "whoah....NOW we're talking!"
I could see his mental picture changing from 3 guys in a PB, beers in hand, watching a white shark....to 3 guys in kayaks no longer than the shark, just inches from the water.

It was cool :smt003

Any chance you might post some pictures of the art that will be in the gallery? I wish I could make it to Davenport, but time is short for us right now.  :smt006

Sean,

You've got mad skills my friend. Absolutely beautiful! :smt007

The shark and octopus is my favorite. I can't tell from the photo, but it looks like the artwork is burned into the wood. Is that true? If so, do you use a variety of sizes of soldering irons ??

Either way, thanks for the free viewing.

And thanks for making May 1st on a Saturday!!!!! :smt006

Yep, on these pieces I used a standard "craft" style hot knife/soldering iron for the images.
A few years ago I upgraded to a Colwood burning tool that burns hotter, and allows for more detail. It's a nice departure from tools like a dremel because it's quiet.
