Work is slow, so thought I'd take up the hobby of pouring my own baits. Does anyone know of a good supplier of the molds and plastics? And maybe some tips as well?

1. WHY? Are you looking for something specific either in color or size or design ? Or just for the fun and enjoyment? To save $$$?  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044
a. If looking for something exotic, suggest it  to Gary Yamamoto Baits or Reaction Baits, they will probably make it and sell it, and let you name it.

b. For the enjoyment-- go for it. I would buy it from a local shop. Fishermans Warehouse sells everything you need. Or they can order it.

c. to save $$$, who are you kidding!

2.
  • Some suggestions: do it outside.
  • Get a hotplate and pots from Walmart ( If you use your wife's cooking pots , she will kill you - NO WAP!) Better yet, get a real Plastic melting pot with a heater and built in valve built in- ~$60)
  • Buy the best of everything, pots, molds, scents, dyes, glitter, ziplock bags (get the real worm proof ones that the manufacturers use, not the store bought ones)... cheap stuff looks cheap and they fall apart.
  • Find someone to go in with it with you, split the costs.
  • there are a few vids on Youtube, there are a couple DVD's out there, watch/buy/rent those first before jumping in with both feet. Initial investment of a melting pot, molds, plastics, and "stuff" for me was over $200, I made about 4 dozen worms. About $50 a bag, or $4 PER WORM! I love tying flies, making worms was a messy , skin burning job. I got rid of the stuff years ago.

My kids screaming but I'll walk you though it later.  You'll need a couple of tea spoons, one or two pyrex, microwave, and some mold making material,  plastic, color, flake,  ultra fine salt.  Maybe I can send you some plastic already colored.  I'll chat with you later. Andy

I've actually been in search of a mold as well. I've had this drawing for years and tryed numerous ways to put something together. Costly hobby if just trying stuff out- but well worth it if something comes out good.

I also use a microwave and small 1 cup pyrex for little pours, and 2 cup for larger pours.  By filling the cup only a little, you can control your pour streams much better.

I get my plastic from Lurecrafters.  I usually get the saltwater and use it for everything.  The new green plastic seems softer and doesn't smlee as bad while heating.  For cheap crayons can be used to color the plastic.  My wife runs a pre-school, so it keeps me in good supply of a lot of colors!  Lurecrafter makes some great molds as well.

You can go cheap and make a mold out of plaster of paris sealed with epoxy, or 50/50 white glue and water painted on.  Build the layers for a smooth finish.  Bondo works great, or Silicon.  I have started playing with making molds with cheap household silicon.  You add a little water to a gob of it, and stir till smooth.  then form around your bait using a frame.  It is cheap and a great way to test a bait.  What suprised me is the quality of baits I get from it!  Not pretty like some of the other molds, but it works.

I made up a sluggo mold last month.  I used the household silicon.  I top pour through a slit on the top and pull the soft plastic out after it cools.  They really look good and have great detail.
