has anybody else run into this message from PayPal? It sounds sketchy to me but every time I log into PayPal lately it won't let me get into my account without first "verifying" my credit card number and bank account number. Of course I did not provide that information because PayPal already has it and has had it for years. Still, the site won't let me navigate to any usable part because it keeps redirecting me to the "security verification" page. Even when I try to go to "Send PayPal an email" or "Call us" it forces me to log in then will not let me past the "verification" page. Here's what the site says:

Security Measures

We are currently performing regular maintenance of our security measures. Your account has been randomly selected for this maintenance, and you will now be taken through a series of identity verification pages.

Protecting the security of your PayPal account is our primary concern, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

There are lots of phishing scams, but that generally takes the form of you receiving an email asking for sensitive info. If you have actually logged on to the PayPal site with your email address and password I would *think* the query is legit, as well as annoying. But these days, better safe than sorry. Does your browser show an address like this?: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_login-done&login_access=12345678

It does show an address like that, but I think if PayPal is going to require a user name, password, AND a credit card number to log in, then I am done using Pay Pal. Because of this stupid verification screen they won't even let me send them an email or give them a call without giving my credit card number first.  :smt011

My brother says he is done with Paypal, as soon as he reaches the limit, before they require a bank account number. No way would he, or I, give them access to bank accounts because they do make charging errors.

As for credit card verification, my credit union now does require entering a password, when ordering online with the card, to verify who I am. Too easy, otherwise, for others to get the security code off the back of the card.

Even if you are certain that you logged into the Paypal site, it wouldn't hurt to call them via phone. Websites get hijacked often, without the knowledge of the site owner.

Thanks for posting the phone number. I finally was able to talk to a person and they told me that in January somebody tried to access my account using an old email address and old password. So, they shut down my account and required me to verify my full bank account number as a verification that I was the correct person accessing the account.

It still made me nervous but I went ahead and did it and regained full access to my account. Once inside my account they showed me three different credit card numbers with three different billing addresses and had me pick which one was the correct one as an additional level of security, and they had me choose my correct phone number from a list which they then called and had me enter in a security code from the screen.

I feel better about it now, but what a pain in the ass!

My account has been closed several times over the years. 1st time was because I refused to give a bank account number after reaching my 'limit'. A phone call took care of that without giving a bank account number.
Lately they close it because of inactivity over a 6 month period.
Again, a phone call takes care of it but it can sometimes be a total PITA.
I don't use PP very much so when I go to use it I have gotten used to having to call them before I can make a payment.

I would not give out my bank account or credit card number over the internet period!  There're many other ways to verify your authenticity beside these important information.  Those hackers are getting better everyday trying to steal data/info.

I work in computer security. Your credit card data is not safe anywhere, it is no more or less at risk online. Look at this, people are installing skimmers with scanners and bluetooth at gas stations:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/02/23/card_skimmer_scam/

I have been involved in case where waiters, storeclerks etc are skimming cards. Bottom line don't let the online stuff scare you again a majority of credit cards are stolen using good ole fashioned offline means.

If you are worried about PayPal, they have some of the best security in the business plus they offer more security if you want it. You want to make it even more secure do this:
