life expectancy polyethylene kayak?

    How safe is a ten year old  polyethylene kayak that has been stored indoors but has seen plenty of time on the water in the summer sun?
     Can an older kayak look safe and unfaded and yet be compromised due to brittleness ?
   Just on the basis of general principles,safety wise, when should a kayak be replaced because of age?
  Anybody know any horror stories personal or otherwise in this area?
  Have I used enough question marks in this post?
