I'm going to be purchasing the Native Ultimate 14.5.  Do I get one with a rudder or not.  I'll be fly fising out of it in bigger rivers, estuaries, and bays.  Thanks for your guts help.

It's been said before, you can drive your car w/o power steering, but why would you want to?  :smt002

I don't use my rudder often, but when I do, I'm gad it's there. Mostly when the wind isn't favorable or currents are screwy.

If you ever have to paddle in a crosswind your other arm will be grateful! :smt002

Go with the rudder, there are times you will be glad you did!

I have an Ultimate 14.5 and it tracks really quite well.  If you intend to put on a lot of distance, then I'd go for the rudder.  I'd say that if you intend to have it set up as a 1-person boat and not change to 2-person very often, then the rudder might be worth while.  If you are constantly going to be going between 1 person and tandem, then it will just become one more thing that needs to be adjusted / dealt with.

Nice boat though... it's been a fun boat to take my 5-year old in.

Thanks EK!  I have the Manta Ray 14 now, but I thought the Ultimate would be a good choice for my guide trips.  I figured it would hold more gear, and it would give a new person confidence that may not have the balance they need for the MR.  Plus, like you said...your 5 year old likes going along.  I've got 4 kids that are 5 and under.  I have a feeling we'll be going out a lot.
