Hello all,  i am moved to write this because of what i saw today at a chinese store, i was in a hurry to buy sauce for marinade.
while going to pay i notice a fishtank with many fish and a few sturgeon it was sad to see because the fish looked pretty beat up and i thought these fish, (sturgeon) were protected.  can anyone set my mind straight? it's driving me crazy.  i try to obey the laws and it p(*&^ me off to see others not doing their share.  Thanks in advance for any replys.

I hestitate to answer because I do not know all the regs but there are a lot of difference between commercial and recreational regs. Also just because some store in San Jose has live fish does not mean these fish have come from ba area or even california waters. Live fish can be trucked long distances and still show up alive.

Bottom line they may not have been breaking any laws or regulations at all. It never hurts to ask someone at the store where they got the fish from.

Generally, most LIVE fish in asain markets (stripers, sturgeon, catfish) are from aqua culture operations.  Some other species like rockfish are wild caught in small specialized fisheries.

Some of those sturgeon you are seeing might be seeing are actually sterlits. They should have a shorter nose. They are legal for sale in the aqua trade in the US.
