Wear it anyplace that easy to access and won't get caught in the kelp!  I wear mine on the inside of the calf.

I wear mine on the strap of my weight harness. Really easy access for dispatching fish. Downside is I loose it if I have to ditch the harness and it's awfully close to important organs if you get tossed by a wave. It's never hung up in the kelp though.

After diving for nearly 40 years I found I almost never used the damn thing. It can become a burden in the kelp which ironicly is what most people think they would use it for. About the best place to put it is on the inside of your leg near your ankle where it won't get hung up and you can get to it for whatever reason( like stabbing that big halibut)or cutting away kelp from where you want to dive to clear a hole.

Whatever you do please don't wear it on your calf if free diving. Imagine being caught in kelp and you instictivley release your weight belt. Now you are fighting the bouyancy of your suit to get down to a cursed knife you never really use anyways. I would recoment putting on your belt(which can be released) or a bcd if scuba diving.

WheelingWillie I am not sure I understand your reasoning.  I would rather have to bend down to my calf than drop the belt and loose it entirely in an emergency.  It would be easier to get it off my calf than on the ocean floor in my opinion  I wear mine in the inside of my calf and have never had trouble reaching it dive belt or not.  I have had to use mine several times to cut my way out of braided line which was hooked up in the kelp or on the bottom.  I agree you don't use it much, but have been happy to have a knife the few times I needed it!

In the kelp, you can actually bite through the stocks in an emergency as well.  Kelp doesn't scare me as much as the braided line, steel leaders, rope, nets, ect.

The chest or either arm are great places for a knife as well.  Just make a little neoprene pocket like Terry Maas.

When scuba diving I have a knife on my belt and one on by BC.
