Anyone interested in teaching someone with no experience how to kayak and fish in the ocean?  I live in Pacifica and have rotating weekdays off.  I'm available Feb. 3, 4, 5, 11, or 12 during the day.  Thanks.

Welcome aboard!  Since you have no experience with kayaking before I would highly recommended to take a kayaking lesson prior venture out to the ocean.  Contact Aaron or Allen/scallen at MBK if you're interested.  See link below:

+1 with what Sailfish said.  Not to mention you might want your first trip out being on flat freshwater.

What are you looking to target on the ocean?  Although there are some species that are not out of season, many are off limits now.

+3. Take an intro to kayaking class.
You should learn the basics, with rescues and all from a pro. The fishing aspect of kayak fishing is always secondary to the paddling part of it.

Kayaker FIRST, Fisherman SECOND

Many, including myself, came into the sport as a fisherman first (naturally for most of us :smt002) but knowing what your kayak can and cannot do, proper paddling skills, dressing for immersion, self rescue, assisted rescue, towing a fellow paddler in distress, following the weather and tide conditions.......are just a few of what you need to learn before anything else.

Good luck, paddle safe and see you on the water soon!

Hi NewFish:

It's best if you book a trip with a Guide who will Qualify
if your Safe to fish with.  :smt002
I booked a trip with Allen and, he told me how and where
to Fish in Davenport. I won Fishermans' Warehouse Derby last year
in Davenport based on Allen's Help.
I don't receive any kickbacks and, I'm just giving you a idea
how I learned how to Kayak Fish.  :smt002
                                                                  Good Luck

Newfish:
I got started yak fishing last September, so as a newbie, i'll put in my 2 cents.

I took a class at California Canoe & Kayak in Oakland b/c it was close to my office.  It gave me good basic paddling, safety and rescue instruction.  It was a good foundation to build on.

I then went out yak fishing with SinCoast (a NCKA member).  It was good to get out on the water for the first time with an experienced yak angler.  Of course, all the advice from this board really helped.

I've got pretty much 2 of everything (yak, PFD, etc.), others have 3 or 4 of everything  :smt001.  When RF season opens up, I'd be happy to go out paddling with you.  I'm sure many others on this forum would extend the same offer, and all the better since they are likely to have more experience than I do.

If you're itchin to get out sooner, I can probably hit a local lake after February.  Check the Hookup section, as many are hitting lakes often, and I'm sure you'll find someone who'd enjoy company.  PM me if you have any questions.

Another learning tool, consider reading some posts from this link "This happened to me"

Start from page 6 (the earlier posts) and make your way up. There were several "incidents" that happened to some of us when we first started kayak fishing - read and learn from 'em  :smt045

Thanks to everyone for all the information.  I will take classes first, before I go out in the ocean.  The links to "older posts" was very eye opening.

I still would like to go out on a lake, so Hamachijohn, if you want to go somewhere, let me know.

Thanks again to everyone.

Welcome" Newfish" I'm also from Pacifica and a newbie.I know fishing out of HMB pretty good from a boat but only been on ocean once in yak.I plan on doing a lot of kayak fishing this year and of course I need to get more yak experience also.I finally have my kayak rigged and am ready to go try sturgeon fishing soon.I went by Lake Merced to see if I could fish and play around there with the kayak and found that there is no longer anyone taking care of the lake. The Kayak club on the lake said it's OK to just kayak just park in regular parking spots after you launch. No fee, no one to pay far as I know. Contact me and we can get out and put in some kayaking time.I have weekends off.I have done a lot of reading on this site and have learned alot.   :smt006
