FWIW,
Being located in Fresno has kept me out of the last 4 AOTY competitions because there was no way I could travel 10+ hours each way to try for Steelhead or Salmon and It is only 4 hours each way just to try for Sturgeon and 3.5 hours to the closest Saltwater
I have a family work for a living and have little time off so I applaud the new format and species. If you think the Bluegill or Crappie are worth a laugh than post your picks and put your money where your mouth is.
I guess the only question I have about the new list is why are Lake Trout separated from trout? Who really cares - I'm in (and I will be sure to post my perch).
Good Luck to all who are brave enough to compete

why are Lake Trout separated from trout?

1.) to add another freshwater species to the list
2.) unlike regular trout, lake trout are actually char (actually so are brook trout).
3.) like steelhead, lake trout get much bigger than regular trout

No doubt. There is a definite technique to getting them to bite and/or detecting it. Case and point was a day Bsteves and I fished for crappie and perch. We sat side by side over the same school with the same jig and he fished me outta the water. After he pulled up 5-6 fish to my NONE I was finished. I went back to casting and trolling which was way less consistent but the only way I can catch them.

Now if I could only figure out how to do that with salmon.  Heck, I'd be happy catching one once in awhile.
