The day was perfect. Temperature in the high 40's, foggy in the am. The river had risen slightly from rain the previous day. The color of the water was "steelhead green". I got to the river at about 8am, late by most accounts, but at seemingly the correct one for this day. As I rolled down to my selected run I came upon a guy standing right where I wanted to be and he was just releasing a beautiful 10 pound hen. He caught it on metal, a lure, not like the three fish I had seen landed two days prior, all caught on flies.
So I chose another run, actually a small pocket, where I had seen fish taken earlier. No luck.
So, like all good steelheaders should do, I headed out to "find the fish". After several stops and bad reports I stopped for lunch and got more reports from the locals.
Heading back upriver I decided to pull into a spot overlooking the river to enjoy my hot dog. There I saw four guys, three throwing spinners and one fly guy in a favorite run. The fly guy was swinging a nymph through the tail out and after a very few casts hooked a beauty that looked to be about ten pounds, just like all the others I had witnessed. They must have come from the same mold. I Had to go give it a try. And try I did. But to no avail.
The day ended as it started. Great. Just fishless.
But wait till the next time.

At least offer a picture of the other guys who caught fish!   :smt002

(or your dejected look from not catching.   :smt003)

Sounds like a worthwhile day anyway.   :smt001

Good on ya for getting out there.  At least seeing a steelie gives you confirmation that they are there and that they CAN be tricked.  Hopefully next time, its you in the envious position
