I caught my only ever Marlin off Kona a few years ago.  Hell of a good time with that.  The only thing that could of made it better was a left handed reel for that bugger, it seemed odd to fight it with a righty...sorry for the thread jack.

Heading to Kona in March. Will post some intel. Kohala is cool but some of the launches are technical. Was planning on hooking up with:

i don't know the outfit. I fished with a local guy a few years back -can't recall his name. I rented a OK p13 angler for the week from a place over by costco. We launched out of a place in Kona (again can't recall the name K-something-bay), paddled out to Wahoo alley and trolled, and trolled.

I launched a few times out of A-bay (as that's where we were staying), and played with the 'cuda's and little jacks in that area. I'll probably do the same this year.

Steve, didn't you fish with Dan?  Kealakekua Bay?  Rent from Plenty Pupule?

North of Kohala you can launch at Kawaihae Harbor pretty easily.  Plenty of options to fish out of the harbor.

Steve, what you really need is a Filipino to carry your luggage and take your pictures for you as well.....perhaps even follow you around with a spray bottle just in case your pale skin get a little too hot  :smt002

oh man you nailed it....that's exactly it! Thank god you all have my back.  Now please don't forget my anniversary is June 21 and my wife's birthday is July 23rd.

I gave dan some salmon flashers, and a sinker release (the fish lazer kind), and apparently it was The Bomb on wahoo and big trevally. all that flashy flashy brought them up from deep

moochy i'd love to bring ya, though only for the pics...my honky skin loves the hot and sweaty (tropics, desert). If i had 40K more miles and a half empty bottle of tequila i'd probably do it.

LOL

Mooch you can stay at my moms house down in Captain Cook any time.  I really like the fishing in Captain Cook too.  Steve if you haven't made reservations I'll see if my mom can get you a really good hook up on logging.  I used to live in Kona and she's been there ten years.  We have a friend that has a couple of houses he rents to tourist and he rents them to us super cheap.  Hope your trip is awesome.  You really don't need a guide.  I might even have a couple kayaks you could use for a week.  Andy

SWEET andy!

we're staying in Kolea condos, in waikaloa. If you've got a yak to borrow that would be awesome- we're trying to do this ultra budgety (hence the ff miles, a nutty discounted condo, and my MOM is coming for babysitting)
