Remember to return your abalone stamp cards, even if you were unlucky and didn't get any this year.
It helps F&G track what's going on with the population up and down the coast.

Also just another hook the government has on who you are and what you are doing. They needed report cards like I need more MLPA's.

Thanks for the reminder.  Without a good data base, how can you manage a resource--except by prohibiting take entirely.

Send that card in, I say.

A couple years ago I forgot to return my card and got a call from the DFG asking why I hadn't turned in my card. I told them I buy one every year and had hurt my back that year and did not get any abs at all. They excused me and that was that.
When you buy the stamp card you agree to return it to them, what's the big deal?  I don't like closures any more than anybody else but I still believe they are on our side.Usually the easiest way to manage an area is to just close it. Without information from those cards they might just shut the whole thing down, then what? Return the card ! It's not Big Brother watching you!

Think what you want. I have been diving the Sonoma Coast for over 35 years and we dont need tags, punch cards. We have quotas and in my opinion the cost of this nonsense would be better spent on poaching investigation. What makes you think that having punch cards and tags is not going to close anything? These guys have the general numbers just by car counts at the popular dive areas. I've talked to the wardens and the rangers. They think they know pretty much whats going on before you even return your cards. Its the law to send them back. So I do. If they are calling your house are they not watching you? Now with Salt Point closed, yes, its only a matter of time before closures will happen.
