FYI - WD40 is NOT water based.

Yeah, kind hard to figure out how that'd work...a water-based spray that is meant to displace water? (WD = Water Displacement) :smt002

What's inside the WD-40?

http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/magazine/17-05/st_whatsinside

WD-40 is mostly a mix of baby oil, Vaseline, and the goop inside homemade lava lamps.

Reminds me of some of the parties we used to have in the 70's...  :smt030 :3some: :smt030

I have found Scott's to be a good place to buy Penn parts and reel or drag grease http://store.scottsbt.com/index.aspx?UserID=1771250&SessionID=ADR8aV9QiLA{LheEsgHp.
Don't mix different  greases or oils as sometimes they may interact and both break down and become useless.  Doesn't apply to drag grease inasmuch that's a separate area.

Mikes reel repair in Santa Rosa. Way better than Alan Tani IMHO. Told me to spray the reels off with freshwater after use and never submerge reels in water to clean especially warm soapy water.  The greases that is inside the reel in enough for a long time. It doesnt really break down except over time and if you use your reel in saltwater a lot you should probably have it gome through at the end of the season. Preventativew care is cheaper than a new reel. Mike is a retired fine machinist and he really knows his stuff. He gaives free advice on waht to do and reccomendations. 707-525-0624 Tell him Craig sent you and that you are a member of NCKA. It did me some good. He went through my calcutta 200 all the way. After all the parts only 18 bucks labor.

Have you got any reels repair/rebuild by Alan?  From what I know about his reel repair works, I'd seriously doubt if anyone can do a "way better" jobs than Alan!

A good machinist by trade doesn't mean he/she is superior in reel repairs and maintenance.  I respect your opinion but I would have my reels repair or maintain by someone I knew and a NCKA's member and have a long records of reel repair.  Sorry for the thread jack!

If you live up sonoma county way this is the guy to go to. Craig. Also reccommended by the OPS in Rhonert Park.

Whoops sorry about that. (inserting foot into mouth) I guess I should be reading up on such things before posting.
