My computer crashed.
I finally got it up and running again. Pretty much lost everything.
I have windows XP home version and I reloaded Norton.
Everything works fine except the most important feature...accessing NCKA.
I can navigate any other website with no problems but when I go to NCKA.org the page doesn't fully load and my computer locks up.
I have tried to access this site several times from my computer to no avail.
Fortunately I have my GF's as a back up. That's what I am using right now.
Any computer gurus out there with a solution?
Thanks, Tote

My computer guru had me download combofix last time I had a problem.  Have you tried it.  It fixed my computer in about 5 minutes.  The guy that gave me this is really good at what he does.   Hope it helps.  Has anyone else tried this?  Andy

Mike, what browser are you using? If IE is what you're using, try Firefox, and vice versa. At least you can eliminate browser as the issue. At work, some company apps will only work with IE. I use IE as little as possible.

I am assuming you are using Mozilla Firefox.

Can you access NCKA using a different browser such as IE, Chrome? If not, then your DNS cache might have an invalid NCKA entry. You can clear your DNS cache by entering "ipconfig /flushdns" under command prompt. Then try to access the site again.

If you can access the site using a different browser, then your Firefox might have a bad cache or cookie for NCKA. To clear them, click "Tools" from the drop down menu and select "Clear Recent History". Select "Everything" and click "Clear now."

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Awwww Tote!  Sorry to hear of your PC woes!!!  Internet browsing has inherit risk... using Mozilla Firefox does help reduce that risk, since most scripts and crap people write take advantage of Microsoft vulnerabilities doesn't affect the FireFox.

When you say you have everything back up, what did you do to "bring it back up?"

You say you lost everything, but unless you had a hard drive failure, a virus that actually corrupts your data, or erased it yourself, it should all be there.  In fact, in some circumstances, even with deleted data you can recover it!

Additionally, if your using Internet Explorer, and it's acting all crappy on you, disable 3rd party browser extensions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298931

If you have installed stuff like tool bars, or add-on's to IE and they are causing issues, disabling this feature will eliminate them as a troubleshooting step.

Personally, I NEVER install any browser extensions, or search bars, or none of that crap because the usually are collecting data on your user experience...

Same with shareware!  It may be a free program, but they usually try and stick you with extra crap you don't need.  If you do need to d/l a free program for some reason, make sure you use CNET or other reputable download site that guarantees that the downloads are spam/spyware/adware free!  And as you do the install, make sure you look at what it plans to install.

Sometimes if your program requires another program to work, you will need to install it.  Other times, they are trying to add a search bar, or PC Health Check program, or some other crap you dont need.

Lemme know if I can help!

Hi Tote,
What about making sure you are typing www.norcalkayakanglers.com instead of NCKA.org  :smt005 :smt005

Technically when computers crash you will loose everything, unless you have forensic software that restores deleted files... for future get SATA internal HD with enclosures and backup everything after update then unplug after..

I hope it helps my friend!

Try to see if you can get to NCKA from the "back door"  :smt003

1) Type NCKA.org from Google search window
2) Click on 1 of those links suggested by Google search

Hope that helps...

I dumped Windows off two machines and installed Ubuntu.   It comes with Open Office, Gimp (a photo shop clone), Firefox, Audacity (edit MP3s), Pidgin (instant messenger)  and a raft of other free software.  I just set up the "Evolution" mail program to check 3 of my mail accounts.

Ubuntu had a printer driver for my Epson printer/fax.  But it didn't have software to run the scanner part of the machine.

Because it's Unix, very few virus' will touch it.   I find it runs much faster than XP or Vista. On my laptop, the wireless connects faster and runs quicker.  Ubuntu is more like the server software that runs the NCKA web site than Windows.

You can download Ubuntu and try, without installing it,, to see if you like it,.

Tote.....that really sucks! Computer geeks are worth their weight in gold. I hope you can get it worked out!

If I can jack your thread for a second I have a funny story. like you, I work for the government, but mine is a county government, not the feds. Last week a mouse/rat ate through the internet cable that feeds our entire county. Apparently we have a fairly large feed cable and a lot of bandwidth. Once they fixed it, they found we were at about 90% of our capacity. The county IT dudes installed a program that blocked websites like Facebook, Myspace and pretty much anything in those types of categories, to include anything not "work related". Their next step was to check the capacity of the bandwidth usage and they found it dropped 9%. I guess people are going to have to find something else to do at work.....maybe even start doing their jobs.

Thread jack off.......good luck!

Norton 360 was for me until the day I dumped it, a pain in the tail section.  Everything you describe sounds what Norton did to me.

My Laptop went south earlier this year, mother board / cpu over heating, it will work for 15 minutes than crash or just pain turn itself off.  It was older and is now ready for the scrap heap or a fire sale on Ebay, not sure which.

As for the back up, I agree with everyone else, definetly backup everything, and then back up your backup.

I am on the GF's computer right now as mine is still FUBAR.
I am thinking about getting a new one soon. We'll see.
I have been so out of the loop as a result.  :smt013
Maybe I iwll try several of the ideas here. It can't hurt.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I really do appreciate it.

Dude I feel for ya!  My laptop was hit again 2 days ago when I posted my last post about surf fishing.  I accessed photobucket site to d/l the tide chart and after that, whamo I was messed up.  "Personal Protector" popped up and XP stopped booting  I was pist.  I just went through this crap little over a month or two ago! :smt013
Fresh install of XP, and I loose everything in the process. Fortunately all my photos are backed up on an external.
Just got it back up after 150+ windows security updated.

Glad you were able to get your system back up.
