Opinions on whether this a serviceable entry level VHF? I need a couple for under the tree, and frankly I'm attracted to the low price point.

I went cheap-o once.....ONCE is all it took. Be careful its not an item you want to fail. I now have a standard horizon and love it. Remember were prone to beat the hell out of gear.

I tried the Uniden's VHF radio once and had bad experience with it.  I wouldn't recommend it to my friends.

I've had a Uniden 250 for 2 years and here's my experience.  It worked fine until I got dumped in the surf and it got wet.  I keep it in my pfd breast pocket so it didn't get too wet but this high pitched scream started.  It stopped after a few days and I figured that as long as I kept it dry it would be OK.  Tough to do when you're OTW but at least it still worked.  This season the battery couldn't hold a charge and after a few messages yesterday the power indicator went way down.  So I'm eying a standard horizon as well.
My goal in life is to be as good of a person my dog already thinks I am.
