I am looking for a lab or beagle puppy. Any leads would be great! Doesn't have to be AKC.

Check out Micon Labs in Lodi. We got our female chocolate from them 3 years ago. She's a great dog. Also have two buddies that got gold labs from them. Both the goldens are 2 years old and are also really good dogs. Micons sell alot of labs so you'll need to get on a waiting list. In the past they have also had a booth at the dog show at the cow palace. Really good people to deal with.

Beagle is a beautiful dog but extremely vocal , and labs are very hyper and chew everything for the first 2-3 years. You would probably be happier with 2yr old lab mix from an animal shelter if your looking for a family dog. I have 3 pure bred labs and if I don't exercise them every night till there tongues drag there not happy

Speaking of shelters, SPCA, etc, i just read an article about shelters & such having an extremely hard time these days due to the economy - donations down, abandonment on the rise...  Probably a good time to get a dog from a shelter - you can probably find a young one, if not a puppy.  :grommit:

Completely out of left field, but I can't help it. We've had all sorts of dogs over the years, including the sweetest Golden Retriever you would ever want to own. But, hands down, the best dog we've owned is a Lab/Grey Hound mix my son picked up while at a 4-H rabbit show. Smart, tough, protective, fun... retrieves birds out of our ponds w/o training, gets way too excited when I hook a fish. I'd get another in a heartbeat if I could find one.

fwiw,

Ben

I have grown up with labs in my parents house with several dogs over the years and two currently. My brother also has a lab which is a classic example of seperation anxiety so I am comfortable knowing what I am getting in to with the labs. Living in the country the pup/dog will have plenty of  room to roam and cause trouble. I guess I will start making the shelter rounds.

I plan on getting a lab after I retire...so that I can have time daily to run the dog. I'd like to have the dog accompany me on the kayak, but a lab might be too big. Don't see how Great Bass 2 or Mickfish manages it with their dogs.  :fish Then again, in Mickfish's case, I know his dog is VERY mellow.

Good luck on your search, Brian. I'll check the local shelter for you.

Only one I found (in the Fremont are) shows a lab available, BUT, unfortunately, the shelter will not let anyone outside the Bay Area adopt. I suppose you could get someone in the area to adopt for you and then take control.

I'll keep looking.

Regarding the previous link posted, I should say that there are multiple pages to look through. And Furry Friends shelter is the one that doesn't allow out of area adoptions. They are not the only shelter listed.

Here is another link, primarily in San Francisco. Several labs and beagles (Palo Alto shelter) listed.
