I have a Cobra Maurader with 8 (factory) flush mount rod holders. I think regular rod holders would work out better for some applications, but I don't want to sacrifice too much of my flat surfaces.  Therefore I am looking for adapters for the flush mounts. Scotty has what's called a Gimbal Mount which they say is for that purpose. However the description is lacking in details. No comments on whether they work with all brands of flush mounts etc. Others must have made these mods so please chime in with your experience with adapters or anything you have MacGyvered

thanks

from what i remember the scotty gimbal mounts would work in my old marauder's flush mounts.  its easy to check.  shine a light down into the flushmount, if it has a slot in the bottom about 1/4" wide, then that should be adaptable.  i never tried one but I always thought it might be helpful to cut some pool noodle or pipe insulation and fit it around the gimbal mount to give a little more friction to prevent it from slipping out.

I saw these on ebay.  This guy makes "rod holder inserts" that look like they might be useful for you.

for those, i wouldn't spend the money.  i made extenders for my hobie by simply cutting a piece of 1 1/2" pvc pipe.

I have a F&N and the Gimbal will work with the factory Cobra flush mounts. I added a piece of pipe insulation with a couple of zip ties for a snugger fit like Bassmann mentioned above. You might have to use a square file up on end on the bottom of the gimbal X depending on the mold of the flush mount, mine was too tight at first. I would also recommend the 6-1/2" height extender. Here's a picture of mine.
