An unidentified diver's body was pulled from the ocean at Salt Point State Park on Sunday by the Sonoma County Sheriff's helicopter crew.

The helicopter, deputies and state parks lifeguards responded to a report of a person floating face down in the water near Horseshoe Cove about 1 p.m., Sgt. Dave Thompson said in a press release.

The diver, wearing a wetsuit, was partially out of the water when Paramedic Scott Westrope was lowered to him on a 100-foot line attached to the helicopter.

Pilot Paul Bradley lifted Westrope and the man to the top of the bluffs surrounding the cove, where the man was determined to be dead, Thompson said.

In a separate incident, just as the mission was completed, hikers reported someone stranded on a rocky outcropping south of Horseshoe Cove.

Two men were spotted on a rock surrounded by rough water, and they were hoisted to shore separately by Westrope and Flight Deputy Chris Lomanto, again using the 100-foot rescue line.

The Santa Rosa men, ages 19 and 20, had been fishing on the rock when the tide came in, cutting them off from the shore, Thompson said.

Damn, that's sad.  From their bar cards, it looks like he and his wife were classmates at Rutgers.  If you want to send condolences to his family...

This makes me think that the closures and seasonal uncertainties will lead to an increase in ocean harvesting fatalities.  Law abiding divers, like Brian Dinday, will push it during end of season jaunts in rough conditions as they get squeezed out of easily accessible areas and try to get "just one more" dive in.  Poachers will continue to dive, and probably do so under cover of darkness or in the craziest of conditions.  I hope that doesn't happen, although it seems sure to.

RIP

There is a rip current at Horseshoe cove that when the big swells come down will take you out to sea. Or kick your ass trying to get back in. The last time I dove up there you could see dertain areas that the rip was moving down the shoreline. Age coupled with conditions may have been too much. More will be reavealed after the autopsy. Prayers to the family go out. Never underestimate the power. Craig

Sad indeed. I wish people would dive in only optimal conditions, nothing less. There are plenty of 2-4 ft days throughout the season that diving in 8-10 ft swells should never be an option.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...
