Went out from Santa Cruz Harbor with my buddy Erik in his SIK and paddled back south to the edge of the Pleasure Point Kelp...

Plenty of action catching and releasing dinks, and feels good to know there are so many little guys down there to eventually grow into big toads...

Got a bruiser 16 inch Grasscod and a fat 15 inch Brown, and between Erik and I we kept 7 other assorted medium Grass, Browns and Black and Yellows.

Erik caught a beautiful Kelp Greenling, but he didn't have any pliers so he paddled over to have me help him get the hook out...after I used my pliers to take the hook out, it did a flippety-flop and got away!!!!

Sorry Erik!!!

Also caught a baby octopus that I fried up and ate as soon as I got home...YUMMY!!!

Was a gorgeous sunny day and I had a blast out on the water with my good friend, fishing and watching schools of big bottlenose dolphins go by...

Good times!!!

Jim,

Nice write up.

I haven't fished SC yet but had heard about the octopus that are about. Have any octopus fishing advice? Is there an area or type of underwater structure they like best?

Reading about the squid in MB makes me want to go there but octopus from Santa Cruz sounds nice also.

You have the on the water photos , the catch photos, and the dinner shots, excellent, and nice variety of fish.

Thanks for the post,

-Tsuri

Tsuri,

I have caught several octopi this year, but all accidentally...don't really know how/where to go to target them...they are tasty though!!!

Here are a few more shots of the post-dinner carnage!!!!

Sincerely,

Jim

BigJim,

Your picture is all over the place.  I saw a pic of you at the Capitola and SC Rental web site fishing report.  Your really know where to fish for those RF's in that area.  I use to rent those wooden boats in Capitola and fish the kelp beds but I only get a few small RF's most of the time.
