I got an email today from Albright Tackle, they are having their annual closeout sale, up to 80% off their stuff. Mostly flyrods and flyreels, but they have spinning and conventional rods too.

I don't have any relationship with them other than I have bought several of their rods and reels last time they had a sale.

Oh man, so tempting.  Thanks for posting that.

I bought one of their trout rods on closeout last year and absolutely love it.  Very good quality.

Thanks for posting this.

A friend of mine has about convinced me to get into fly fishing, but being a complete, ignorant, noob, I don't want to spend a ton to check it out. I also don't want to undershoot quality and undermine my beginner's experience.

So, I was looking the GP series of rods/reels here and comparing them to Reddington Cross Water2. In your guy's opinion am I looking at the right stuff? Is one clearly superior to the other?

Appreciate any input.

Thanks

Ben

I have the GP 90894 (9' 8/9 wt 4 piece rod) . I love it. I paid full retail, I'm going to pick up another one as a spare and a 10' 7/8 wt 2 piece and a 9' 10/11 wt. 2 piece for Mexico and delta BIG stripers in the wind. I think the Albrights have a little more beef in the butt section than the Redingtons I have tried, but I've only tried the larger sizes of Redingtons, I have so many trout rods, mostly Sages that I don't even look at trout rods any longer. Both companies make fine equipment, and stand behind them in the warranty department too. Sage owns Redington, and I know they don't sell junk.

If they have it in the size you want, get a 4 piece rod. You'll thank me later.

The GP reels are great. At $45, they are so cheap rather than buying spare spools, I buy extra reels. Rig one for shooting heads, one with a Rio Versitip line.
