Avila Beach

Well heading to pismo beach to ride teh quads for a few days
and decided to take the kayaks and hit Avila Beach
Has anyone fished there is it a good spot?
Any info on the surrounding area would be great
I will try and fish i think teh wife will just do the cave tour thing.

You will see three piers - go all the way down to the end of port san luis and launch to the right of the second pier - parking can be nasty so get there early and you will be set for easy load in/out.

Halis have been hitting in the shallows along the cliff.  If you make your way along the jetty and out to the point you will hit on some good rockies - if its not too rough outside the point go around and you will see a series of rocks 80 yards or so off shore - lots of good fishing inside and outside there - turns to a washing machine quickly and big waves can come over those rocks so be careful.

when are you going?

Again today the birds are diving hard in the bay ... so bring your sabiki rig you should be able to make bait ... if not swing by the east side of the third pier to the bait dock...Deke, the bait guy, will sell you some ... if he is there. There is a buoy beyond piers two (Cal Poly) and three(Hartford) but east of the end of the jetty... it marks some rock spires that rise from the bottom to 20-25ft. from the surface... I've caught rockies there before. JK is right... Hali's in the bay ... and the rocks outside the end of the jetty (Hogg rocks) can be dangerous but hold fish. There is also a fish cleaning station at the beginning of Hartford pier.

so out around the jetty huh seems a little harry im still new at this stuff
what about the kelp at pirates cove will it hold any fish
like i said i might have the wife with me so i will try to make it a safe trip
i will also have my iphone on me so i will keep checking teh site to let you guys know exactly when i will be going to the area
also where exactly is the cave tours ?

Paul at Central Coast Kayaks, 805-773-3500 in Shell Beach, can give you info. on the cave tours... I believe they launch down the street from their shop and go south. The kelp does hold fish...at times... but I think you'll have better fortune further outside the kelp...find some structure. Hali's sometimes can be found in the lurking in the sand between kelp patches. And speaking of lurking... be careful... Pirate's Cove is a nude beach between Avila and Shell Beach.
