The bite was not wide open but I did manage to hook up with some nice lings today to about 20 lbs.  Returned them all since I'm looking for that 30 lb fish.

I had one monster of a fish just outside of the point between Salt Point and Stump Beach.  I was retrieving my jig and was about half way up when it got vicously slammed.  This fish headed for the bottom and even with my drag down tight, there was no stopping him.  He finally holed up and snapped my 30 lb test leader after dragging me in a zigzag for a few minutes.  All I could say was "Wow, that was a big fish."

South wind was a pain but should drop.  There were fairly large swell sets.  You could not cut the corner at the point outside of Gerstle Cove; you had to paddle down the middle.  Lots of debris like large whole trees in the ocean today.  Looks like the next couple of days it should lay down some.

Ah, man!  I goofed when I tried to work the Spell Check to get "viciously" right....

I can't spell it, but believe me it was a beastly hit!

John- How deep were you fishing?  What kind of jigs were you using?  Did you hook any reds?  Thanks for the report, I plan on heading there on saturday.

Travis-
I was in appx 60 ft of water using 6 oz leadhead swimbaits, both rootbeer and chartreuse, tipped with squid.

It's interesting that you ask about reds because yesterday I never hooked one.  That's the first time this year that big reds haven't shown up.

Hang on tight, there are some big lings down there!

Awesome.  Releasing a 20# unit is amazing.

Wish I could Allen.
Unfortunately, I'm out of WAF and my ab punch card is full.

Next year, we should try to maximize carpooling since gas is so damn expensive (thanks George).

That Big Ling has been off the salt point flats for a long time (10  years.)

We have even tried to having someone in the water with a spear gun and try to catch up with the fish while it is hooked and shots the dam thing. But, every time it drags you into the kelp and rocks to break you off.

It has to be a big fat old Ling or maybe a wolf eel.

Have fun with it. Good luck. :smt017

I'd like to carpool more, but you really need a trailer to haul more than 2 kayaks.  I might get a trailer sometime, I've got the space because I got a house with a big yard, but I don't have the funds - because I got a house with a big yard... :smt011
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.
