I recently bought a ruler sticker from Coast Side # 2 and stuck it on my paddle - IMO, works like a charm since I usually keep my paddle resting on my lap when I'm fishing in between spots. Once I get a fish on board my deck, the fish is easily measured.....

I also pre-cut a broom stick to 18 inches when striper fishing - besides serving as a ruler, I also use it as beater stick :smt075 .....and it floats too  :smt023

You can also mark your net handle (if it's long enough). I originally measured my fish with my net handle - it was perfect cause it's exactly 30 inches long.

Using the sticker on the paddle is an excellent idea, plus it helps you line up your two piece paddle in a hurry.

I used a sharpie to mark relevant lengths in my footwell, where I can lay a fish down nicely to measure.  There's a tape in my pocket for photo finishes.
