Got on water late yesterday around 12:30 just east of the pier. Lots of families sharing the small strip of beach and enjoying the sun. Almost as soon as I put the kayak in the water the wind came up fast, whitecaps reaching the shore, sand blowing down the beach. I wasn't even going to try to make bait, it was hard enough staying upright. I got out about 300 feet and decided that was far enough - I was going to attempt a few short drifts toward chrissy field, with frozen anchovy. Even though it was windy, the water was still clear enough to give me some hope. About five minutes into my drift i felt some obvious rockfish like taps on my chovysicle - stunned, I set the hook. The line started peeling off, racing up both wind and current, moving from bottom toward surface. Good, a few head shakes. I put my feet over the edges of my yack to keep from losing it and gave myself a little more drag. By this time I was far enough from structure so I just let this fish get tuckered. At the first sign of color I saw fat bass. On the boat, the fish was tired and bled quickly. I opened the plugs to let out the water from the crashing whitecaps. Never leave a hot bite - I paddled to rock the same drift. More action - but I was too eager and was striped about five times in the next few drifts. I was having delusions of a full ice chest and a big bbq with the bros. Still happy, I went in. Fishing is funny like that, sometimes you get lucky on your birthday.
