I'm wondering if it is worth keeping the live bait you catch and freezing it for the next time out?  Also are the smelt 10"- 14" too big to use?

Depend what are you fishing for.  Stripers, Hali, Ling ---> no problem!  Big bait = big fish  :smt007

I do all the time. Salmon Univ. site has a good brine recipe. I have a freezer full of macks, chovies, and sardines. If you think its to big you can always chunk it for sturgeron, rays and sharks in the winter.

I just salt the hell out of them, so much that it looks like it snowed in the container.
It will be nice and firm the next time you go out.
The nice thing about it is you have bait at a moments notice and don't have to worry about timing your trip around the bait shop.
