Penn reels use their HT100 drag material, which i believe is carbon fiber.  I was using an old Penn squidder and jigmaster.  These are nearly indestructable, and easy to maintain.  The drawback is that they are a bit heavy.  I bought a Shimano TR100 about 2 years, and I really like it.  It is 4.3:1 grear ratio and holds 200 yards of 20lb mono.  It is graphite contrcution, so it is light weight and corrosion resistant.  The best part is that it only cost about $60.  The one drawback I saw was the handle.  The stock handle is pretty small, so I bought a Shimano Super Stopper handle.  Now it is fine.

ABUs are great and hold up really well. Take them to Alan Tani and he will make them super sweet. You can get them for under $100 so even if you trash them you are not out that much.

I've been using ABU 6501 C4s with upgraded drags and power handles, work well.

Round Abus are great, get one with a thumb bar for ez jigging, or if you can swing it the Abu Revo Inshore is and incredible little reel.

Guys, thanks for your opinions, I fished with a Shimano Corsair on the 4th of july up at fort ross, was the first time I used it in salt, it worked well just not sure if it will hold up to the salt, was just thinking maybe I should look for something a little more durable! Anyone know what Alan charges for a tune up?

I got an abu and TR200. I agree the TR is great and yes the handle kinda sucks. But it's been bullet proof.
