Fished the south coast with my friend Ernie today. Talk about perfect conditions on the water, barely a breeze, nice bank of fog, and the swell was hardly there. I didn't think the Big Sur area got that calm, we're talking glass water! The fishing was incredible! Vermilion after vermilion! Along with the mixed bag of olives, coppers, and blues. I kept on catching canaries. Maybe the DFG needs to take these off the list because they were abundant out there today. Saw pelicans and a school of dolphins graced us with their presence, I had a great time. Just being in Big Sur is awesome. This trip today made me appreciative and grateful of the fairly close proximity of this outdoor treasure we in the Monterey Bay and surrounding areas are so blessed to be able to enjoy. Funny thing today was the absence of Mr. Ling. He failed to make an appearance. I soaked a whole jacksmelt for a while too. I know he was in the neighborhood due to some teeth marks on the tail of the jacksmelt but neither of us landed one. I have pictures on my cell phone but haven't yet figured out how to download them. I'll post them once I master this technological art.  :smt003

I am told that the DFG takes the survey information they receive about how many Canaries are caught and projects it over the whole fishing population.  So, if a number of fisherpersons report they caught an average of 3 canaries, that is projected to say that all fishing caught 3 canaries.  So if they figure there are 10,000 fishing, 3,000 canaries were caught and once what they consider to be the allowed amount is exceeded, rock fishing closes.  Thus, the north coast closed in August or September last year.

Best thing to do is move if you are catching Canaries.  What we report to the DFG biologist can have repercussions.

Sounds like both of you had a nice time OTW.  Thanks for the report and pictures.
