Shannon and i hit up the Crissy area in hopes of chasing a halibut report.  I never chase reports and usually it is because the few times i do, I never catch anything.  I usually just follow my gut depending on WX, tides, location and time of year for whatever species of fish and do good.
Well, this time was no different.  Armed with some live shiners, Shannon and I managed not to catch a striper or butt, heck, didn't see anyone else catch em either.
But, for some strange reason, I caught these, a freakishly large 20+ inch 6lb rockcod and a 27" lingcod, on a flat open sand bottom.  Crazy eh?

A great trip, but still no halibut.

WTG on the odd catch. At least you didn't get skunked. 6 lb rockfish is a nice size, the pic isn't too clear, what kind of rockfish was it?

Sorry for the crappy pic, the wind was picking up and I guess the camera was shaking pretty good when the pic was taken.  Anyway, brown rockfish.

Very nice Tom. I hear there are lots of bait fish in that area. Perhaps that is the
reason why they are in that far and in the sandy area even. Beats coming home
empty handed again. :smt002

I would have never guessed you would catch rockfish at that area. Very nice to see you caught some keepers. Maybe I need a pink rod!

That happened to me one time out of ft bragg. We where fishing sand dabs, friend loves to eat them, and we kept getting our dabs grabbed by lings on the way up.

I think what is happening is a concentration of food, like small crabs or bait fish and everything comes eating.

i was marking a ton of bait so there ya go.  Kind of blows out the sedentary life style of rockfish though eh?
