I went yesterday on Queen of Hearts, I've been going out with them for years, I've completely focused on lings, and I was rewarded with 2 26" and 40"  :smt002, I lost two hitchhiker  :smt013, I was gonna use a trailer but this guy (deckhand) told me I am over one hook I am allowed to use only 2, my set-up is simple, I have a scampi 5" (just for verms or quality rockies) on the front, leader for a live bait, I told the guy stinger its not counted as another set of hook since its attached to the same body of bait/lure I'm using, my simple argument was,, if what he is saying is true, then DFG/tackle shop should cease of selling/allowing lure to be sold with 3 hooks on them, Am I out of line here fellas? Please enlighten me, oh, I also won the pot $5/person my estimated 15lbs lings held up and caught my limits of rockies, AWESOME!!! the weird part no cabbie on site...

Congrats on the nice lings...

I think the deckhand may have been right about the stinger/trailer hook putting you over the two hook limit...

This is from the CA DFG regs:

"Method of take: Not more than two hooks and one line. For purposes of this section, a
hook is a single hook, or double or treble hook with multiple points connected to a common
shank."

Sounds like even though your hooks were all part of the same bait/lure, they are not all connected to a common shank...unless I misunderstood your scampi in front of the live bait leader set-up...

Anyway, congrats again on the nice catch!!

WTG on the ling.  Nothing weird about the 2 hook limit though, and they should know better on a party boat...

my estimated 15lbs lings held up

A 40" ling would have to be really skinny to only weigh 15 pounds.  I'd put it at minimum 20 and possibly 24.

I was gonna pick-up a Tarpon 140 in Sac yesterday this is what happened!!! you can see on classified forum!

What a bummer the owner end up to be a complete jerk a$$hole, I talked to him around 1 oclock and told him I am taking it, So I geared up fill the tank and pick-up my wife, on my way I called the guy for his address and gave it to me I told I'll be there in an hour or less, I was excited and ready to roll brought some extra rope just in case, driving from san francisco to sacto are no jokes, anyway, I found his place around 4:00 and called that I was in front of his house, well guess what he stepped out just to tell me he SOLD it to someone else just 15 minutes before I got there, I said do you have any idea where I came from? I drove all the way here from San Francisco!!! besides I told you I'll take it, He says "What do you want me to do the guys showed with cash" I didn't start to say anything cause I have a bad habit if start talking I cant control myself my hands will just swing (besides he is way bigger than me  :smt044), I just walked away and say aint worth it, and  hoping that he would get the worse Karma possible,

My thought exactly but I don't want to over exaggerate my estimate, it was 39 3/4" to be exact when it was measured and a fatty, I had a hard time lifting it despite theres no more guts and gills, oh well look on the bright side I still won the pot!!

My guess is if you got caught with the hook setup you were using, you would have quite an argument on your hands.  My understanding is you can have 2 hooks only (the stinger treble hook is considered a single hook).

Exacta!! See shank represent the main line if you have 3 shrimp fly jigs that's definitely illegal, coz you are tying to catch 3 at a time, but if you are using stinger (Some stinger are even sell and stores gamagatsu has them) you are just making sure to get them hook, otherwise this type of lure need to be ceased please see attached photo,

There are plenty of lures that are "illegal" for the ocean - they're not selling them for specific uses, so it's a moot point.  Just don't use more than 2 hooks fishing in the ocean and you'll be fine.

Darius, hate to say it but the deckhand was right. Those lures you showed are legal in salt, just not for rockfish, (or salmon)....for instance, for halibut, outside the gate, i believe youre allowed up to TEN hooks, inside the bay, 3. Unfortunatly ive seen tickets written and paid for for that exact same set up.
