Left my grandmas house in Arnold at 4 am and got to the lake by 5. Figured it was going to be a nice day with the foggy water and all the trout jumping everywhere. Not! Couldnt get them to hit any lure I had. and I tried EVERYTHING and I mean everything. Spinners, kastmasters, flies, wedding rings, needlefish, at every depth, with and without dodgers, flashers. It got very frustrating. I could see huge schools of them since the clarity was nearly 15 feet. Oh well, beautiful lake. Saw bald eagles, snakes, deer and lots of rodents.

I paddled out to the island Brian. G. wanted to camp at, and it's perfect. Big enough for a huge group, plenty of spots for tents, and plenty of flat granite for whatever.

I spent about 4 hours on the water, had to get back down the hill to work on a side job. I will defnititely be back, but next time I will bring bait to try. Oooor perhaps dynamite lol, jk

Another terrific report.  Boy do you know how to tell a story with pictures.  And this thread's title answers my question in your last one.

Too bad about the skunk.  Did you try the flies in the moving water (pics 19 & 20)?  I'm just a sucker for streams and rivers.

There was a river with good flow, maybe 600+ cfs coming in, it's in the first picture, but it was dark, I fished it for about 15 min. I trolled a wooly bugger very slow waaaay back from the yak. I was going to hit the iver again but there was about 6 people fishing it from shore so I just pulled the yak out.

Cool pictures Jeff. I wish my in laws didn't sell their house up Twain Harte. I love
the lakes up there. Very similar scenery like the photos you took.

Nice report, Jeff. Never been there myself but those pics make me want to visit. Seeing the schools must have been frustrating. Too bad about the skunk, I wonder if they would have taken a crawler on a dropshot rig.

Hey Jeff,

Sorry about the skunk but at least you were skunked in beautiful surroundings. I love that area but hate the fact that it has been overrun by so may people. We were up the hill last year at Lake Alpine and a few of the restrooms were closed due to vandalism. You know it is getting bad when that happens and there is gang signs etched in the trees.

As far as using the right lure, My Dad swears by the 1/24 oz. brown trout rooster tail for that lake as well as Lake Alpine. Don't tell him I told you. I think he has about 20 of these and sells them to us at a premium price while fishing up there  :smt044. I have used them quite a bit and have done well. He also likes to float worms with no weight. Another great producer for us.

Take Care,
Ray

Looking @ your pictures is giving me a jones for the High Mt's. I can almost smell the pine trees, and some pure granite to do a little bouldering...ummm Ocean-Mt's

early 90's Had one of the most spectacular fly fishing days I ever had...anybody ever catch so many fish that you stopped because you've caught so many...it was in that river you were talking about slayed... C/R  60+ fish felt like 100, they were spawning, buddy and i just killed um...never seen anything like it before or since almost every cast was either hooking a fish or getting bumped/multi bumps...we were nyphing...I'm going to call my buddy and refresh my memory...

Thanks for the Post and pics Jeff... :smt004

Jeff those fish at Spicers are real line shy. I've had to go down to 2 pound test when the water is that clear. Also they like real natural presentation like a real small grub with no weight or a sinking fly.

Before the state dumped all those eagle lake trout in there the wild trout used to be real fun to C&R. They were big, fat and hard fighting. I sure miss those days. :smt010 Theh lake had a balanced eosystem till those 300,000 figerlings were stocked and they ate everything
