You'll get both answers to your question. Personally, I use an Avet on the water. But I also pull it apart completely twice a year and clean it very well, grease all the non moving metal parts, and I use a greased drag to help keep water out. Still, each time I pull it apart there is definite corrosion to be cleaned.

I'm sure it gets wet at that point but I'n not usually looking at it at those times. I also run braid which I notice carries a bit more water back to the reel. And, landing fish tends to splash the reel quite a bit.

One of the features that makes certain kayaks more appealing to salt fishers is the ability to stow rods and or fish inside the hull.

Lots of guys use Avets kayak fishing, probably because they're wonderful little reels. You won't get any definitive answers as to whether you should use them, because it all comes down to pros and cons.

For me, I'm not fishing for super strong pelagic species, or casting great distances, so spectacular free spool, tons of ball bearings, and butter smooth drag are not crucial. Fishing Norcal, we spend our time fishing primarily for rockies, ling, and halibut. You can target these fish successfully with reels that cost less than $100, without any real compromise. I like the ABU's, and old school Penn 501's. I like knowing that I can replace these for 60 to eighty bucks if I goof up- and we all goof up. Tons of other options as well.

Having said that, if you love the Avets, just take good care of them, and consider stowing your reels for launch and landing in a dry bag, or you may be able to stow them mounted on the rods inside you boat...depending on the model.

I find my reels get the wettest from sitting in the flush mounts where there are sitting on the deck. Gotta make some extenders like Adam

I go back and forth using my avet on the yak. But considering our target species I have pretty much use one of the following and have had no issues. 1. Abu 6500 (better for casting) 2. Shimano TR-200G (jigging). The back up reel is Penn 9. All level wind (one less thing to deal with OTW. And can be replaced for $60 - $100.

thanks for the replies guys , i like the idea about the intenders on the flush rod holders

i was thinkin that when i launch and the gear is inside the hull that the water will get um , but if i use some type of  bag or something then they might be alright , as long as they dont get submerged .

I fish my Avet on the kayak. For maintenece all I do is rinse it off for a normal trip and when I dunk it, especially in the surf, I disassemble everything but the handle and gears for a cleaning, drying, degreasing and re-greasing. If I don't dunk it I service the reel every couple of months. So far no signs of corrosion after about 4 months.

If I get the reels wet it's usually on a launch though occasionally a landing will do it.

If you want to stow the reels for launch/landing get a dry bag.

I've been fishing avets lately.  They sure need most TLC than other reels, as I have to break mine down every 4-5 trips.  I get twice that many trips out of other reels I use, in the same use conditions.  Otherwise they just don't feel as smooth as they should.  The smoothness is what attracts me to them in the first place.
