I bit the bullet yesterday and bought a Hobie sail for my Revo.
Took four other family members and kayaks to UVR for a picnic on the other side of the lake and to give it a test drive.
LOVED it!  :smt007 :smt007 :smt007
I was glad I did some research on the Hobie forums before I took it out.
Rigged it up in the backyard and practiced furling and unfurling and set up and take down before I took it to the water. VERY glad I did. Made all the difference in the world to get the major bugs out of my technique first.
What took me so long to get a sail was the price but after today I have zero regrets.

Cool! That actually is the one reason I would have to get a hobie! I am guessing the fins of the drive would act a bit like a keel/dagger board? If you don't mind sharing. How much was it?

I have one too and it works great.  I used to use it on an Outfitter tandem and it didn't work nearly as well as it does with the Revo.  I'm upgrading my drive fins later this week which is supposed to make the sail work even better.  The sail is a great way to get back to the launch area after a long day of peddling.  The wind at Del Valle always blows back toward the docks in the afternoon if you fish the dam area.

Not really. The Hobie forum was a big help as I stated earlier. I used to windsurf a long time ago if that counts.

They retail for $319+tax.
I got it at CCK in Rancho Cordove and they still had last years price tag of $290+tax so I got it for that price.
It is still a big ouch factor but I figure this kind of stuff is my passion and I am only gonna live once. It didn't put me in the poor house; so why not?

One more thing I didn't mention that I like it's ability to tack. Now I can get across a lake even if there is a head wind by using the sail. BIG PLUS.

Wow, it looks like fun.  I bought mine used for $250 but haven't try it out on my Hobie Sport yet.  Will definitely try it this summer!  Thanks for the reminder  :smt001

That looks super fun.  I had hoped to do that in my Adventure, the islander kit looks like a GAS.

Just a reminder, practice a self rescue with that thing on and make sure that the mast is secured to the mast hook.

Not going to risk bending the mast by doing something I feel I am already comfortable doing.
I did a lot of sailboarding in conditions I will never have this thing in so I am familiar with being in the water and dealing with a sail.
At least this thing doesn't have a boom.
Not only does the mast hook keep the sail attached to the kayak it also acts as the downhaul.
I have a clip on the mainsheet so I can easily disconnect it from the sail. This makes it a lot easier to furl the sail. I have a seperate clip with a small piece of rope and little float I use to secure the furled sail.

Law requires you register any sail powered craft past a certain length (think it was 8'), so you'll need CF numbers for your yak now.

Wind power is pretty awesome as long as the wind is blowing the direction you want to go.  Are the flippers/rudder enough of a keel to tack with it?  I s'pose you could get a keel that drops through the flipper hole.

Not gonna happen.

The rudder is enough to tack. It actually glides easier with the fins in the up position when you get some speed going.
