I need to streamline my tackle.I brought way too much shizz.Even after losing three megabaits I still had enough iron for most of the season with me I think.Which equaled heavy dry bag schlepping on the cliff scramble.

Heh. I've always fished "light", minimum tackle, I don't even use a FF.  First time I fished with you northern folk I remember thinking to myself: "Jebus, I've never seen so much gear". I thought you guys must fish all day and through the night.

Man two days fishing the south coast of Monterey is a killer.  At Garrapata I was mainly going for lings but I could not resist a 21 inch cabby that went for my Purple Scampy on the first drop  :smt007 .  Scott, that rod works just as well for cabbies as it does for lings and verms.  The bite was great early but the wind and rain made the last 3/4ths of the trip a bit of work.  With steady fish between kelp ties and a super fast drift we ended up staying shallow which was better for releasing anyway.  The bite was steady and I got one underling as well as an undercab several schoolies kelps and gophers.  I kept the big cab, a few blues who had hooks through their eyes and one gopher for my neighbor who says they are his favorite.

There was no comparison to Friday but I can not complain about the cabby or the company.

Here are a few pics.

Great picks Sackyak and thanks again for another great session. You are a savage dude! That cabby you caught like eight seconds into your first drop was unreal!

Dinner last night was fantastic! Wife and I made Panko encrusted olive and black rf with Japanese fried rice, steamed veggies and fresh homegrown lemon. The fillets from the thick 19" olive looked like pork chops when pan fried in olive oil. Thanks to my wife for cooking and cleaning help because I basically passed out after the feast.:smt003

Great Bass,I think a more aggressive tread shoe is a great idea! I used Nike air ACG adventure racing/trail runners with mysterioso socks for the portage down and they worked great.I also have a pair of Teva Wraptor water shoes that I wear with mysterioso and Hydroskin wet socks during the summer/fall.

On the return portage Sunday I used NRS paddle shoes with a mysterioso sock.I kind of liked really feeling the ground ninja style with the thinner sole. However, booties don't offer much ankle support or lateral control. On those algae covered cobbles slipping and twisting is always a risk.Gotta stay low and test each step carefully.

Images of this beautifully rugged coast and the mysteries it holds have been flooding my mind all day.We are truly blessed by these experiences.

Great report.  WTG.  I may have missed it in your writing, but did you guys have trouble with seals/sealions taking your fish as you hauled them up?

I used to fish there a lot and used to have lots of problems with them.  When it first happened I thought I had a WSB.

Ab10, We never actually had a fish taken by the sea lions, but at times the group of a dozen or more large juveniles would spy-hop and rush toward our boats.I don't doubt they scared off a bunch of fish because they punked both Sackyak and I away from a spot where we located an aggregate school of fatty olives and blues.I even had an olive chase my iron right up to my yak in one spot. The structure here is amazing. At one point I drifted over the same pinnacle twice because I first thought the sonar reading of a jump from 88 to 22.5 fow was anomalous.Snag city!

I've dove right out where some of your pics were taken (or near there) and some of those pinnacles are pretty awesome when the vis is really good.  Big Coraline algae covered underwater mountains that drop off into the blue.   :smt001

That explains what I was reading on my ff...that must look amazing. If I ever freedove there it would be way later in the season on one of those days when Mother Ocean reveals her secrets, instead of a day when she reminds me I am human. :smt002
