Hit up MC's with my 20% coupon and snagged a lake troller downrigger. I am gonna work on a mount and re spool it with spectra. What are you guys using for weight? I can't see a 7lb'r being used. 2lb? 4lb. I got some salmon balls (hehe he said salmon balls) will that work?

I rarely use any weight heavier than 2lbs.

2lbs is enough, unless you are going for macks; deep. I wouldn't use any weight without a fin, you will get twisting :smt013.

I use the smallest of the fish shaped weights and I think it it 2.5 lbs.  I couldn't find a smaller one (in any shape).  If they are out there, I'd sure like to know.

I like 4# with fin find it in Cabala's catalog. Also the heaver the weight the more positive the release will work. I mounted my downrigger to a Scotty rod holder[took off holder and bolted downrigger to the riser] and now I can move rigger to any Scotty base, I have six.

I use the Scotty Lake Troll 1073 with 50lb braid (easier to cut if tangled) with a 2.5lb fish weight. This will stay fairly straight at 1.5 to 2.5 m.p.h. and allows the release to work well. The 4lb weight will also work but seems to cause a lot more drag. Also some guys want to use heavier braid which also causes more drag and is harder to cut if snagged.
Caution - If using a D.R. be sure to Carry a sharp pair of cutters for emergency use and also Carry extra Weight, Release and Terminator.
 Hope this helps.

Any idea where to get small fish-shaped molds to pour my own? I have 200# of lead in the form of 2.5# cannon balls that aren't serving any purpose.
The fishing was so good I thought I was there yesterday!

Hit up MC's with my 20% coupon and snagged a lake troller downrigger.

They let you use the 20% coupon on the downrigger.  It was already on sale for $10 off (down from $69 to $59) AND you got an additional 20%.  Wow, maybe I should try that.

I'd love to see how you mounted this.  Do you have any pictures.?

Dilbeck - No they just gave me the 20% off the original price so I saved a few more $'s. If the mount question is for me. I'll take a pick on Monday and re post. I just used the scotty gimbal mount for one of my rear flush mounts. If the mounting question wasn't for me....well you got a freebie :smt001
