Hello,
I am looking to build a Multi-measure device from aluminum flat bar to measure Abablone, one that will have a range of "calipers" from 7" -10". Anybody have ideas, suggestions or drawings they wish to share? Thanks!

Head over to Bamboo Reef in Rohnert Park and pick up one of these.
$20.

It is only about 0.5 miles north of the Outdoor Pro Shop on Commerce.

My only advice on design is that this a good 10" and 7" gauge, but does have some inaccuracy with the diagonal measure for 8" and 9". Since most consider a 10" ab a true trophy and you must have a 7" fixed caliper to be legal.  It is a great design.

See ya on the water.

Hi Divers:

Don't forget to Round off all sharp corners or the DF$G will write up up! :smt044
I still use the .50 cent Plastic fantastic that I purchased from
the Yearly DF$G confascated Gear sale.
My Eyes are Calibrated. I only go after the Largest and, only go after Abs that are Relaxed out of the Shell
I don't use a Ab Iron but, keep a Al.Aly. cheepo in my Game Bag.
I just bump the Abs off  like the Lings. :smt005

You have to round off sharp corners of a GAUGE? Why? I thought it was just the iron that needed smooth edges.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Hi Divers:

Give the DF$G a reason and, thay will write you up! :smt010 Any tool used that can cut a Ab, should not be used. The reason is, the Abs will bleed out with even a small nick! :smt044
My spin but, if It's looks like a Clicker don't even bother.  :smt002

P.S.

If you are going to sand it make sure you do not make it larger than 7" inches while you are at it.

I have taken store bought ab gauges and bent them open to 7.25 and had them checked by DFG and never had a warden say it was bad,if the ab just clicks it is still a quarter inch over and legal.the gauge on my float will be 24 yr old this season and is worn out to seven and a half and still good to go for me.I would rather have a gauge that is too loose then too tight and not letting me take an AB thats six and three quarter

I've never heard of this confiscated gear sale before!?!  When/where does this happen?

I decided to do a test version to try out in the water this weekend should i find a place and conditions that are suitable. I had some scraps of sign material that I cut these out of - the 7" and 10" calipers are slightly oversize . . .
