Over the past several months I've taken a co-worker of mine and his daughter under my wing to teach them about fishing. We've gone to San Pablo Reservoir and Del Valle and had good success bank fishing, but I am wanting to find someplace closer to their home so that they can go out for short trips on their own too.

They live in Napa and I plan on taking them out fishing again this weekend. Does anybody know of anyplace within, say 30 minutes of Napa, where an 8 year old would have a good chance of catching a fish this weekend?

We're bank fishing, usually with bait, because of the limited skills of both the young girl and her dad. However, as most people know, the best way to get kids involved in fishing it to make sure they catch fish, even if they are tiny! Any help is greatly appreciated!  :smt006

Cuttings wharf in Napa will be great for young kids. They can fish the left side of
the boat launch. Another spot would be the right side of the boat launch but, you
have to pay 1 dollar per person to fish his private property. The good thing about
this place is that you are next to your car. Goggle the place and you will find it.
Sorry I don't have the actual address of the place.

The address is 3200 Cuttings Warf Rd.  The public dock/ramp can get crowded on the weekend with fisherman & boat trailering, but food & restrooms are available..  The private pier I a short (couple hundred yards away) distance from these amenities & much more roomy.

Thanks for the advice Jed! I haven't fished there before, but I am wondering what the action is like. With an 8 yr old that is new to fishing I think it's important to make sure they have a good chance and catching a few fish which is why I've gone out for blue gill and trout with her in the past. If we fish with anchovy can we expect a bunch of schoolie stripers at this time of year?

Depending on the tide, schoolie stripers are a pretty good bet. I saw someone there catch a 57" sturgie too. That might be a little much for an 8 yr. old.
The fishing was so good I thought I was there yesterday!

My dad always has a blast fishing at Cutting's Wharf.

Usually cathes anywhere from 10 to 30 little stripers on his ultra-lite rig. Usually fishes anchovy chunks.
