it never ceases to amaze me how much tackle, tactics and fishing skills are used for freshwater bass fishing.

Call me a cynic, but I think the amount of tackle "tactics" and "skills" used in bass fishing are 95% marketing bs. Bass fishing is big, big business. Because it's C+R it's sustainable and because bass live everywhere and are pretty easy to catch, there's a big market for it. Most of the bass fishing shows I've seen are basically just adverts for gear. There isn't the same market for most other types of fishing because there just isn't the fishery.

Completely agree.

You want to experience some real fun, start crossing over your gear from one species to another.  Plugging for rockies is off the charts fun when you get on em.

Answer to the question = IMO: absolutely NOT.

I with Allen B. = it's the angler that can catch MULTIPLE types of fish in different bodies of water in any kind of condition with minimal gear takes more know how. And sure, a little luck and being in the right place at the right time also plays big a factor.

IMO - Kayak Anglers, float tubers, row boats, canoes and even those bank anglers who do what they can to cover water under their own steam is what I consider the "Zen Fishermen" (by the way, when I mean bank fisherman, I don't mean the bank fisherman who hucks glitter powerbait and sits in his lawn chair and waits for the fish to come to him = that, IMO, is a form of luxury fishing :smt002)

Having to tackle a big fish in a small craft "by youself" with no deckhand to offer you assistance or even a having Boat Capt. carefully manuever the boat for you so you can battle the fish with no worries is another form of luxury fishing to me :smt002

Just my 2 cents on the matter....

the hardest fish to catch is the Winter Steelhead. Fish of a thousand casts. Find the crappiest weather, and go fish in the teeth of the storm before the river blows out.

Tournament bass anglers have all the toys because they have to be adaptable. They MUST catch 5 bass each day HEAVIER than all the other competitors, in varying conditions. They are always looking for an edge.

If I have 10 lively shiners, 5 live frogs and 10 live crawdads there isn't a bass in the world I couldn't land, given enough time. You just have to get it in front of their nose when they are hungry or pissed off. They're just rats with fins!
