I would like to go out to the American River or one of the local lakes Monday and get some practice dive time in. Is anyone interested?

If your planing on diving the American and haven't dove it before be very careful especially this time of the year. The waters cold, low, obstacles like trees and rebar etc. can be a problem, and the currents can be tricky. I have been diving the river for many many years and wouldn't suggest it for anyone that's not familiar with it. Try Folsom or Natomas is you just want to get wet. Oh by the way are you free diving or with a tank?

Diving in a river is dangerous dude I've done it before spearing carp. Viz sucks and a whole lot of debris in the murk and floating around. I was stabbed in the forehead by a branch of a submerged tree. Result was a 3inch deep bloody gash, it was a good thing I had alcohol, peroxide and crazy glue with me. A bass fisherman was watching stitch my forehead up on the bank.

No tanks, just a 7mm suit. I wouldn't go in the river unless I was in a slow deep pool. I haven't checked the water yet and it might be too cold. I just got out of my pool and it was @$%# cold.

The American is really clear no problems with visibility but you've got to know what your doing!

If I had to pick diving in the American or diving in the ocean I would say hands down the river is much more dangerous(for the most part). You constantly have a current on you and if you get lodged in something your F$*ked. In the ocean at least you have a push pull current which helps if you get stuck.

Go to Natoma get some practice and some crawdads!  :chef:

I love diving Negro Bar for crawdads! That's one of the best local dives.
Let's do a feed when the water is a little warmer.

Here's a Negro Bar dive report from 2007:
