I read about small sacks of pebbles used on rocky shores. It's cool to see a sack being used with great success. Nice report, excellent fish.

Actually yakaroo, for shore fishing for rockies I find the small sacks of pebbles are better in almost every way than the conventional lead.  First, they are cheaper.  They are lighter to hike out to a far-off fishing hole.  Next, they are much more environmental; think about how much lead we leave on the bottom.  Also, the cotton thread breaks off easier, often letting you keep the hook.  But the most interesting thing I have found is that they snag less in the first place.  It must be because the small lead weights slip through smaller cracks in the rocks.  So, good observation, I am a big fan of the bag of rocks.  There are some great shore fishermen in this group, so I wonder if some will disagree with me about the Bull Durham bags.  They may roll around more in heavy surf since they are less aerodinamic.

hey peteb nice fish

how much weight can you get into one of those little bd bags?

You drop a ton of lead trolling salmon
it's downright shameful

somebody at hi's told me there were going to be some new regs out but I never heard any more about it

You can probably get 6 oz in there.  Works great, hangs up less and costs less.

I remember when I was a kid salmon fishing with my father.  I told him I thought it was strange the way people fished, dropping thousands of poisonous lead balls on the ocean floor every year.  He said he used to think about that when he was a kid, and his father talked about the same thing.  So he said, imagine how many are down there.  But no one did anything about it.  I think they eventually added steel to the sinkers.  Someone here probably knows.  Those Pink Lady planers work OK.  The Bull Durham bag would not...

Ive never used the bags before but see them all the time in the bait shops. Sounds like a great idea. How do you set it up?

tie it on like a weight, fill it up with pebbles and sling it out there.  pretty straightforward.
