I know nothing of a shallow water honey hole with giant yellowtail and rainbow perch  :smt007

Nah...don't get me wrong everyone.  I've caught tons of perch from shore and have my own personal pile perch haunts & BSP breakers.  I just never heard of anyone catching perch from their yak except for a few fly fishing posts in So Cal.  Was really looking forward to doing this in the ocean cause I'm really trying to limit my bay fish consumption.  After my sturgeon, I'm CPR'n all my bay fish.  Since it would be hard to convince DFG otherwise, I guess I'll have to wait for Rockfish season.  Of course by then, most of the big perch are full of babies and I catch and release them when they're carrying young (just ain't right keeping pregnant females).  Thanks for the input everyone.  Later

Good luck and tight lines.

I've seen lots of perch (and no rockfish) in 5-8 ft of water in rocky areas during April (while ab diving), I used to shoot a few but as SurfFisher noted many were full of young, so I haven't done that for years but they're still there. My point is that if you did want to try it and the day was calm enough to hang out in water that shallow, you could make a valid argument that you weren't targeting RF. If you do try it remember hook size is also an indication of what you're targeting as in the sand dab regs. On the other hand, just chancing a disagreement with the DFG probably just isn't worth it.

I've seen that too, but it's mostly just because the perch school around mid-column while the grassies, greenies and cabs that are there will hang down in the rocks themselves.  I think you'd still be more likely to catch a rockfish than a perch if you fished that area - even with a dinky hook.

Ah, the debates we have due to not having much of a rockfish season any more...   :smt009

Being an honorable sportsman is way more important than what you catch.

Yeah, you've probably got a point there, especially the cabbies,

and your last sentence, well there certainly are a few threads to nowhere (and some frayed nerves) on the board right now.....

But I'm off for a day or two of travel trailer roughing it on the Russian R (no fishing) this time of year is for point building whether it be GAF, WAF, or FAF.
