I have a couple of tools people should consider getting to maintain their reels. A friend of mine closed her jewelry store and gave me her commercial model Ultrasonic Cleaner and a steamcleaner for jewelry. You cannot believe how easy it makes it to clean off fish scuzz, blood, rust, corrosion, grease...

I got mine for free, I then loaned then to a friend of mine and they got stolen from his truck, so he is replacing them. I didn't realize how much the commercial ones cost, but I found these online. He insisted on replacing them, so I tried to find him a deal.

#1 is an ultrasonic cleaner. You immerse your object in a bath of cleaning solution, and Ultra high frequency sound waves vibrate the object in the cleaning solution for about 3 to 30 minutes and PRESTO, its all clean! The one I used to have had a small 12 or 14 oz. chamber to hold the solution. I found this one which hold 1.2 Quarts, so a whole reel could fit inside without first disassembling.

#2 is a steam cleaner. It shoots a blast of steam like the coffee machine at Starbucks into a mesh container that holds your parts.

The thing about it is you can buy them for your "spousal unit" and telll her you got it for her so she can keep her jewelry clean and sanitized, therby scoring major WAF points! I used the steamcleaner for fluffing the hackles on dryflies, making bucktails and Clouser Minnows lay straight, welding rubber worms together, blasting food and grease stains out of shirts...

I haven't dealt with the company I linked to yet, but you can Google up your own if you want. You just can;t believe how quick and clean those two tools make cleaing up .

i have an ultrasonic cleaner as well.  it works ok, not great, but just ok.  the problem is that the reel has to be totally stripped down first.  not for the faint of heart.  and regarding the steam cleaner, i got one of those looking for a way to clean bearings without having to go through half a can of carb cleaner.  the steam cleaner worked well for my wife's wedding ring, but didn't work worth beans for bearings.  if you want something to clean a reel, try what i use 99% of the time, an old toothbrush......
