How they can tell the age of fish (in days?).  Key word: otolith.

For baby fish there are daily rings.  We make a thin section through the earbone...using jewelers tools, and take digital pictures with a microscope.  It's delicate work, but not that difficult.  BTW, the work in this article was done at my lab at UC Davis.  www.icpms.ucdavis.edu
