the longer rods are nice for trolling.

eric b, you could get a 7' to 9' koke or crappie rod for trolling with an abu reel. (no line twist).

then a second rod for casting and trolling both, at least 6'6 long for use with a spinning reel.

This is exactly what I use. I have a 7' light action casting rod with an Abu 4600, and a 7' UL  spinning rod with a Shimano Sahara 750. :smt023

I agree that optimal length for a dedicated trout trolling rod would be 7-8' with a moderate action made of second generation graphite or fiberglass matched with a baitcasting reel. Here are the specs on a rod made by St Croix as a dedicated trolling rod...

I like shorter rods myself 4.5-5.5 feet in length, 7-8 foot rods are nice when you have the space, but a short rod is great when there is a lot of overhang, gives you some room to work with.  Granted they suck for casting distances.  But I have never had a problem keeping 5 " 2 peice rod in an airplane over head either.  Pro's and Con's to everything.

I go with ultra light spinning gear. I just got and uses a cabela's classic $20. It an ultra light so its a blast when you hook up. For trolling I got a Lamiglass Kokanee Special. A bit pricey but it can do double duty when I am in Tahoe for Kokes and Macks.
